Black History Month 2022
As Black History Month comes to a close let’s take a look back at some of the events that took place across the UK this month.
Events like these provide an opportunity to start conversations about race and this year’s theme of ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’ shines light on the necessity of conversations like these to bring about change.
Sculpture Trail, Bristol
One of the UK’s largest art installations which comprises of 10 globes dotted around Bristol as part of ‘The World Reimagined’ project. The trail explores themes relating to racial injustice and African history.
Leeds Black History Walk
This event allowed people to learn about the lesser-known stories about the African presence in Leeds on a guided walk of the city. The walk featured stories dating back as far as Roman Yorkshire and tales of the Leeds mummy and Yorkshire artist and dance teacher David Hamilton MBE.
Ballet Black at the Royal Opera House, London
British ballet company Ballet Black celebrated its 20th anniversary by returning to the Royal Opera House with two new works, ‘Say it Loud’ ‘Black Sun’.
Bars of Reassurance: Poetry and Grime with Yomi Sode and Caleb Femi
This event features renowned Black British poets Yomi Sode and Caleb Femi discussing the connection between poetry and grime as well as poetry readings, an audience Q&A and a screening of a collaborative short film made by the two poets.

Black History Month Events, Leicester
Serendipity, the Institute for Black Arts and Heritage in Leicester ran a month long programme events with highlights including a performance by multi award-winning alto-saxophonist, MC and composer Soweto Kinch at Leicester Jazz House and Rush – A Joyous Jamaican Journey, a play which tells the story of reggae, narrated by well-known comedian and actor John Simmit.
