After 3 years of Taliban rule…

1. In 2021, The Defence Horizon Journal published my article on the lessons African countries could learn from the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban. The article is attached below.

2. After three years, West Africa is considered the new epicentre of global terrorism in terms of the number of attacks and casualties. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are mostly affected in the region.

3. Despite efforts by the federal government of Somalia to bring al-Shabaab under control, the group still has the strength to launch attacks. In Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, the locally inspired ISIS affiliate keeps threatening the stability, with a spillover to southern Tanzania.

4. Parts of North Africa, especially Libya have become a safe haven for extremists as rival state and non-state actors compete for dominance.

5. While these threats persist, there is a feature of them that could be seen in Taliban-led Afghanistan: the clash between Al-Qaeda, its affiliates and allies on the one side and ISIS and its affiliates on the other side.

6. In the Sahel, the Group for the Protection of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahel (ISGS) are competing for influence, recruits, territory and resources. A branch of ISIS in the Horn of Africa is currently competing with al-Shabaab. This can be found in other parts of Africa.
