By Fidel Amakye Owusu
1. Even though African states have performed creditably in resolving maritime disputes between and among themselves, some hurdles persist.
2. These include piracy and maritime terrorism, especially in the Indian Ocean coasts and the Gulf of Guinea.
3. There is also the unfortunate ‘utilization’ of the waters for drug trafficking that is becoming a major challenge across the continent. South American cartels are making West Africa a transit hub for cocaine.
4. Also, global power struggles are exploiting the strategic maritime locations around the continent, as Great Powers jostle to establish naval footholds.
5. These present major challenges to littoral states in a continent that still has mostly developing economies.
6. On 31st July I will join the Webinar below to help elaborate on these challenges and demystify the complex dynamics that come with them. My focus will be on the African continent.
